Wednesday, November 21, 2007 How much should copyright issues matter? A lot On Tuesday the Copyright Alliance (CA)- an organization that in all honesty is not the biggest fan of Digital Freedom as a coalition or a concept - announced that they would be circulating a questionnaire to all 17 Presidential candidates to get their views on "copyright issues." It is a rare day that we are in complete agreement with the CA, but its the holiday season after all and today is one of those days.We could not agree more that anyone who truly wants to be President needs to understand the age they are living in. Each candidate should be asked and expected to answer how they would change or influence the copyright policy and law in the coming decade - policies and laws that affect every single American. Ok, Thanksgiving or not, here is where this rare agreement comes to an end. With an accurate appreciation of how important copyright law and policy is to Americans, perhaps candidates of every stripe for every office should focus a little less on Hollywood’s agenda and more on the consumer’s rights and concerns. Let’s do the math: there are six major movie studios and four major record labels. Meanwhile, Apple has sold more than 110 million iPods, and over 170 million Americans are said to be online any given time. Anyone who doesn’t find these numbers compelling probably shouldn’t be in politics and certainly not in the White House. So after a quick show of hands from those that care about entertainment, technology, and/or music and movies – the question then becomes, what do these digital voters want? They want to be recognized as legitimate consumers, and they don’t want to be treated as criminals, by the entertainment companies or by the government. They want to use their lawful music and movies when and where they want in their private homes, free of lawsuits and harassment. And they want to use technology to create, innovate, and enjoy the full promise of our digital age. No question addressing these issues and listening to consumers – not entertainment conglomerates – will win votes and pave the road to the White House. Just do the math. posted by Digital Freedom Campaign # 10:39 AM << Home |
