Monday, January 14, 2008 Piracy: not just for the public any more We are back from Las Vegas, a little sleep deprived, but excited by what we heard from thousands of innovators, consumers, and artists who stopped by the Digital Freedom booth at the Consumer Electronics Show. Check out what some of our supporters had to say about the evolution of entertainment and technology in the digital age and what digital freedom means to them.If there is an underlying theme to these interviews, it is the frustration of consumers being treated like criminals and labeled as pirates. Which brings us today’s lesson, piracy is a dirty word thrown around far too loosely by the “content industry” to besmirch consumers exercising their fair use rights to use music, photos, and movies for their personal – non commercial – use. Turn about, as it turns out, is fair play, but not fair use. As the Washington Post reported this past week, “in an increasingly user-generated world where the public is the artist, sometimes it's the big boys who get grabby.” Email us and let us know what you think about Fox’s violation of copyright for commercial use. posted by Digital Freedom Campaign # 8:36 AM << Home |

Digital technologies allow everyone the freedom to be artists, innovators, producers and creators, and to listen, watch, and participate wherever, whenever and however they choose. That freedom must be protected and nurtured. |
